Technical education
Belgium has a structural lack of trained technical personnel. Various studies have shown that these vacancies are the most difficult to fill. The situation is caused not only by a shortage of applicants but also by a lack of appropriate skills. There is an urgent need for investment in technical education and (re)training.
The problem mentioned above is the subject of a working group launched by Business & Society Belgium in 2008. Following an investigation into the current situation we noted that many, wide-ranging initiatives are already in place to encourage young people to opt for technical training or a technical career. However, they do not have sufficient impact to meet the rising demand for technical qualifications. In the first place we focus on possible actions that could be taken at secondary school level. Secondly we are looking at potential actions at job seeker level.
